CityKids is a Medical Child Care Institution. At CityKids, parents and their children can visit the Nursing Child Care Center, the Development Center, Children's Home Care, Practical Pedagogical Family Support, 24-hour care and also Supervised and Protected Living for young people with intellectual disabilities. Care for children and youth is inseparable from their parents and their environment. From this family-oriented perspective, CityKids offers intensive care and treatment to families with children, who have (severe) nursing care needs, intellectual disabilities, developmental delays and or autism. The mission is to provide high quality care and treatment to children with disabilities and/or nursing care needs. So that children with disabilities can develop as well as possible and participate in society as normally as possible.
For the recovery and well-being of children receiving day treatment at CityKids, it is important that they are in an environment where they feel comfortable and enjoy going. A so-called Healing Environment*.
Bikkels Foundation bears CityKids a warm heart and, among other things, helps realize this unique environment at various CityKids locations thanks to many donations from funds and companies. Silvia Grijseels of the Bikkels Foundation, "We grant these children who are already unlucky in life a healing warm environment. An environment that makes children feel at home and happy." "This is not only nice, but actually contributes to the children's recovery and well-being. Our dream came true!"
The Bikkels Foundation supports care-intensive children who are seriously, incurably or chronically ill and young adults with disabilities. Indirectly, the foundation also supports the families of these children and young adults. The Bikkels Foundation does this by supporting these vulnerable children and young adults financially and materially through fundraising, donations and by organizing events.
A "Healing Environment" refers to a carefully designed physical and emotional environment that contributes to the well-being and recovery of patients. For sick children, this means that the environment is adapted to promote a sense of comfort, safety and calm. This includes elements such as colorful, friendly and nature-based décor, natural lighting and playful distractions in rooms that facilitate both medical treatment, day treatment and emotional support. A healing environment creates a calming and reassuring atmosphere for children and can reduce the stress of a different environment, accelerate healing and positively impact the child's overall well-being and state of mind.
This environment can reduce anxiety and stress and promote recovery by creating a sense of connection with nature. It can also encourage creativity, positive emotions and a sense of normalcy in sick children, which is essential for their physical and emotional state. To Hana Sabanovic, Sizo's healthcare project manager, the simple question was posed, "Create a healing environment for the CityKids facility Blessing in Zuidland."
A simple question, but not a simple task. There were no designs or files; interpretation was left entirely to the free spirit of Sizo's studio staff. The target audience was obviously known so with that in mind we set to work designing.
Besides the creative challenge of designing something that would make children a little happier, there were also quite a few technical challenges in this project. For example, the inside of an elevator shaft as tall as 9 meters had to be included in the design.
In the end, the theme became a meadow landscape in keeping with the surroundings of Children's Care Home Blessing. The outside of the elevator was transformed into a hollow oak tree. The elevator shaft was therefore designed as the inside of that hollow oak tree, where new funny little animals appear on each floor. Because new animals and scenes can be discovered everywhere on the walls, the design continues to challenge and cheer up children.
Technically, this was a typical Sizo project involving a multitude of different materials. On the walls we worked with seamless Airtex wallpaper printed in-house with the playful design. The inside of the elevator shaft was pasted with a high-quality hightac foil with a wear-resistant laminate. A floor sticker was applied to the bottom of the elevator to complete the experience. The elevator doors are equipped with clearview foil with a print. This is necessary because the windows of the elevator doors must remain completely transparent.
Application was done by our experienced stickers where especially the elevator shaft presented an interesting challenge in terms of accessibility.
"This is a project where Sizo was in control of everything from design to production and finally the application," said Hana Sabanovic.
This heartwarming assignment was typically a project of Hana Sabanovic, project manager at Sizo specializing in healthcare and healing environments. She has already been able to complete quite a few of these beautiful projects. And always happy faces upon completion! Not only of the clients and sponsors but above all of the children who use the unique facilities that CityKids offers. Soon we will inform you about our newest Healing Environment that we are currently realizing, because these kinds of jobs make all of Sizo happy."
