What is a milled letter?

Milling Letters are three-dimensional letters or logos carved from various materials, such as wood, plastic, metal or foam, using a milling machine. A milling machine uses a rotary cutting tool to mill away material and design the letters or logos create.

Milled letters can be produced in a variety of ways, depending on the material and desired finish. For example, they can be milled from solid material, milled out with a cavity behind the letters for a lighter look, or filled with acrylic or other materials for a fuller and thicker look.

Milling letters are often used for company name or logo display, for example on facades, billboards, interior and outdoor advertising, displays, shop windows and more. They provide a professional and eye-catching way to communicate a company's identity and can be produced in a variety of sizes, shapes and colors to meet specific needs.

Materials for milling letters

The choice of material largely determines the appearance and durability of a routed letter. The most commonly used materials are:

  • DibondAn aluminum composite sheet that is lightweight and weather-resistant. Suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications.
  • Plastic (PVC or acrylic)popular due to its workability and wide range of colors. Acrylic has a high-gloss finish and is available in transparent.
  • Aluminum RVsfor a sleek and timeless look. Widely used in office environments and representative spaces.
  • MDF or woodSuitable for interior applications. Gives a warm look and is easy to paint or cover with foil.

Free-standing letters as facade advertising

On the facade, routed letters are attached directly to the wall or to a backing board. They give the facade a three-dimensional character without the need for lighting. Routed letters are therefore suitable for locations where illuminated advertising is not permitted or where a more subtle look is desired.

For facades where visibility in the evening is also important, milled letters are sometimes combined with indirect lighting or replaced by box letters, that can be illuminated from within. Read more about facade advertising options on our Facade advertising page.

Free letters in in-store environments

Besides facade advertising, milled letters are popular in retail and office environments. They are used as wall decoration in reception lobbies, as brand identity above checkouts or shelves, and as part of a broader In-store signing concept. The letters are often sprayed in the Pantone colors of the corporate identity in that case for a consistent brand experience.

A routed letter is a three-dimensional letter or logo that is cut from materials such as plastic, aluminum, MDF, or acrylic using a router. They are used as facade advertising or in-store signage.

A milled letter is solid and has no internal lighting. A channel letter is hollow and can be internally lit with LEDs. Milled letters are used where lighting is not needed or not permitted.

Free-standing letters are made from materials such as Dibond, plastic (PVC or acrylic), stainless steel, aluminum, MDF, and wood. The choice depends on the location, desired look, and budget. Facade advertising letters are therefore proven effective for standing out, making an impression, and increasing brand awareness.

Yes, free-standing letters in Dibond or aluminum are excellent for outdoor use. They are weather-resistant and require little maintenance. Plastic and MDF are more suitable for interior applications.
