Sustainability, corporate responsibility and carbon footprint are aspects that can no longer be ignored in our daily lives. More and more companies are becoming and are increasingly aware of the impact their business operations have on climate change, the environment and society.
This also applies to the sign industry, one of the largest industries where a lot of PVC and plastics are used. More and more initiatives are being launched to meet wishes and demands for sustainability: more use of "green" and sustainable materials, recycling programs, less use of PVC and chemicals in inks.
SIZO puts "green" on the map not only as a product choice. We go one step further. We are convinced that you should do everything possible to work as sustainably as possible. We have therefore set up four pillars that fall under SIZO Green in order to achieve the total picture:
To make an objective statement about our sustainability efforts, we had our eco-management system tested by DNV and were one of the few companies in the sign industry to be awarded ISO14001 certification.
We already had an ISO9001 with which our error rate has been reduced to a minimum which contributes very much to reducing waste and energy consumption. As icing on the cake, we are now also a certified partner of "Trees for All" (certificate number 17377134715589) to offset our CO2 footprint, which we cannot eliminate 100% in the end anyway.
If you have waste, you have to deal with it responsibly, at least that's how we feel. We have taken a good look at our waste streams and invested in materials to process them as well as possible. This did not happen overnight, because why throw something away if it can still be (re)used! We have had extensive contact with a number of our (foil) suppliers to find out which materials are circular and which parts are recyclable so that we can make a clear distinction.
The caps that are in the packaging boxes of our film to fix the rolls are collected and then collected by our supplier. Cartridges, printer cartridges and batteries are collected and donated to Cliniclowns. There is a conscious effort by our people to see in which container what should go: paper- metal-wood-residual waste. And yes, that certainly takes extra time. But we're happy to make up for it. To make everything clear and avoid confusion, all containers are clearly marked with what goes in them.
Our biggest waste stream involves the protective paper of the film. Because this is plasticized, it cannot be recycled with the waste paper. We are investigating, in cooperation with a number of suppliers, whether a circular system is needed for this as well so that these residual materials do not end up on the waste pile either.

Developments in the signing industry have not stood still! Fortunately, more and more has been developed in the field of "green" alternatives and more and more PVC-free material is available. However, there are some snags in this. For when is something truly sustainable or green? When it no longer contains PVC, but the production process of this "green" alternative is so much more polluting than the PVC variant? And how long will this "green" alternative last?
In short, is "green" really as green as people think?
We have looked at this extensively and made conscious choices. For all indoor materials, we will offer two options: the "green" alternative and "regular" alternative. For all outdoor materials, we will consciously look at what is a "green" alternative, and also sustainably produced.
