Interview Selma Dekker

What are you concerned with?

As a product and process developer, I am responsible for the ins and outs of the organization. My focus is on the work process. As a critical organization you not only try to work more efficient and smarter internally, but also towards the customer. I support my colleagues so that they can achieve the right end result. After all, no two projects are the same. Despite the fact that we work with the same products, there are always nuances. Take a monumental building as an example. When a illuminated advertisement is to be hung on the facade of a historic building, this involves different challenges than a brand new building. There are different technical aspects and preconditions. Consider the conditions of a preservation society or an architect. We treat every sign project as custom work.

Fighting against time

Surely time is the biggest challenge we face. In a new construction project, for example, we are the "final piece" of the project. There are phases that precede our work, think of the structural work beforehand, building an interior and laying tiles. When delays occur here, it can cause a lot of pressure. Where we originally had a week, that is suddenly reduced to four days. Then when the customer does receive his store in a new look on time, or sees appealing advertising on the facade, this gives quite a kick.

And what is your role in a new application?

I am especially involved with clients with multiple locations. When rolling out a new corporate identity, I map out which products fit the customer's requirements, what materials are needed and what advice is appropriate. I check whether the customer's wishes are feasible and fit within our production standards. This sometimes leads to interesting puzzles.

What are your qualities to be able to realize signs?

We actively think along with the customer. You often see at comparable sign companies that they have set up standard processes that customers have to comply with. I think customers have limited time and don't want to look at this. After all, it's not just about the product itself. I think our strength lies in the flexibility with which we set ourselves up. This is reflected in our products in the technical and material fields.

What are you yourself most proud of?

Of course, I am satisfied when the client is happy with the final product. The customer does not notice the time pressure that is often present. Despite a project being difficult or challenging, I am happy when all the processes are well set up. Of course, I do not do this alone, but together with my colleagues. My job is to make sure they can do their work well.
